Re hatches the trouble with the RN is when the vessel is built hatches
are installed to enable access but as the vessel ages they cant bare to
see all these unused areas ie the top of the hatch I remember on HMS
Ceylon a cruiser I had to take a genset out of the engine room and yes
there was removable hatches all the way up to the shelter deck and every
one of them had equipment installed on top of it, it took me nearly a
month to get the hatches clear before I could even start on the genset
removal. had a similar problem in Singapore needing to change 4 x main
gensets but this time I was in dry-dock so just cut a hole in the side
of the vessel and shunted them out into the dry dock 4 units out and 4
units in complete with bed modifications in under a week
