PS Not to worry, they said, it might never happen, and if it does .... we'll find a way. – I like that Hugh.

Re hatches the trouble with the RN is when the vessel is built hatches are installed to enable access but as the vessel ages they cant bare to see all these unused areas ie the top of the hatch I remember on HMS Ceylon a cruiser I had to take a genset out of the engine room and yes there was removable hatches all the way up to the shelter deck and every one of them had equipment installed on top of it, it took me nearly a month to get the hatches clear before I could even start on the genset removal. had a similar problem in Singapore needing to change 4 x main gensets but this time I was in dry-dock so just cut a hole in the side of the vessel and shunted them out into the dry dock 4 units out and 4 units in complete with bed modifications in under a week

  Colin,

Wow! So they cut a hole in the hull and take the engine out whenever it needs replaced. Every time I see that engine something new emerges. However, I do recall that, when I was on the design of HMS Newton, I informed the MOD(N) that there wasn't a snowball's chance in hell of removing the port or starbd propulsion generators unless the design was drastically changed. The centre was OK, since it was possible to have a big enough hatch over it. Not to worry, they said, it might never happen, and if it does .... we'll find a way.

  Hugh.
