The roughneck's solution to the 3 ball problem I can well understand.  The architect's is elegant, if a wee bit hard to achieve without practice.  The engineer's has a certain metaphysical quality - creating a pyramid with 3 balls is quite something.

One of the drillships I worked on while with Scotts, Ben Ocean Lancer, was flooded with Yanks who spoke an arcane language, as did the suppliers approved by them. Their electrical equipment arrived festooned with redundant advice such as "MUST BE INSTALLED BY COMPETENT ELECTRICIANS". Few items had such luxuries as holes for HD bolts - they had never seen anything that wasn't welded down. "It ain't oilfield", was a conversation.  They operated on the assumption that Scotts had never built a ship before, so rows were frequent.  Despite specifying and approving the BOP handling winches, they uprooted them and dumped them over the side while still in the Clyde after delivery.
