Mike,

It's a variation on the electronic engine theme. Too slow?  Too slow for 
what? Is it the specified cruising speed that's short? Was 15 knots the 
specified maximum, and for how long?  And it took 15 years of "trials" to 
find that out, one year per knot.  Dear God, we used to dispose of all that 
it in an hour on the measured mile. I earned near £3,000 on the 31 days 
first trial of ESV Iolair (didn't get asked to the second) - must be some 
wage bill for the Astute's trials.  Some cargo ships are at the end of their 
useful lives after 15 years, never mind a bit of rust or a leak or two.

What has the grounding to do with it all, and the murder?

PS  Sounds to me like a gearbox problem.
