A slight variation. In Australia, or at least in Western Australia, we have 14 or 15 on a jury, to allow for dropouts due to illness etc. At the conclusion of the trial the actual jury that is to decide the fate of the perpetrator is then drawn by ballot, the jury foreman is not included in the ballot. In other jurisdictions. like I think in the UK the system is to have reserve jurors, may have changed though.
