The Cuckoo's Egg by Clifford Stoll.

I used it in my Computer Studies classes from the early 1990s to the  
time that I retired. I bought a class set.

A fascinating story.

I can recall that in my 'museum' at school I had a memory board made  
up in the same manner as you describe. Also a hard drive disk of some  
10 Mb capacity but around a foot in diameter!.
