Colin,

I wrote without consulting the book - the actual quotation is, " .... the true Babel is a divergence upon morals."  Stevenson obtained a donkey called Modestine and took himself off on a tour of the Cevennes which, as Fred will tell you, is/are in France.  Arriving in Florac he found himself surprised and pleased that, after generations of "sabring and shooting, burning, pillaging, and murdering" each other, Catholics and Protestants in that place met "in mutual toleration and mild amity of life."  The Babel he referred to is the one in which neither party understands what the other is saying.  What an erudite site this is.
