All but 5 are valid.

Last name stays put.

In Scotland a woman retains her maiden name, legally, on marriage. She can call herself whichever one she wishes, and some do. Having a seat at a dance with the lady who became my wife, newly met, I asked her her name. Nettie Bain, she said. That was 1958. Around here, to some ladies, I'm Nettie Bain's man, and she is Mrs Janet McIntyre - NEVER Mrs Hugh McIntyre.

Nut on a bolt, LH or RH?

I recall the 7/8" set pin on the bottom end of the (bottom) piston rod on the Doxford - it was LH, and upside down, which caused a moment or two of thought. I was Junior 2E/O on MV Clan Maclay at Birkenhead in 1959, engaged in running home that set pin, having worked out which way was what, when I was called to the Dock Office. Someone else finished the job. I washed, dressed and packed - and got a train to London to join MV Clan Maclaren as Senior 2E/O.

Same work less pay.

Never worked alongside or met a female marine engineer at sea, and only one fitter on land - Vye Westergaard, Kincaids, Greenock, 1940s - I worked near her. Her father wanted her to have a Chief's ticket and a Masters. Did she get them? No idea. She was paid more than me, being in her third year when I was in my first. So no figures to work on. There was a draughtswoman in the same office as me with Babcock & Wilcox. She was a wee mouse of a woman, shuffled about not bothering anybody.

New shoes don't bugger up feet.

My new shoes skinned my left heel a couple of weeks ago, and my other ones did it again at the wekend.

Can open all jars.

Maybe so. My right wrist is still pretty sore from a jar opening session I had nearly a year ago.

Hugh.
