Like you, I can't think why the word "God" was dropped. It's no skin off anyone's nose to swear to something they don't believe in. Possibly it's all to do with the latest "inclusiveness" bullshit - concerned people getting their knickers in a twist over the thought that they who don't believe in gods might feel put out at not being able to join organisations that require one to say the word "God" with a capital letter.

When I joined the Scouts I had no reservations whatever about saying God/god - it was prerequisite for joining the Scouts, not a matter of bloody conscience. I didn't say it because I thought I was a christian - as I was then and am now I dislike being categorised according to someone else's notion of what religion I might or might not adhere to.  I'm not a stick of rock with something written up the middle.
