[BITList] Idiocy

Frank,

The problems with these big MOD contracts arise from the sheer technological ignorance of those at the top - "couldn't pump up a tyre", I said of them in a letter to a paper once. And yet the stupid bastards make decisions. What is needed is people at a "lower" level who can tell them to eff off, to bury their asinine input before it becomes toxic. I was such a one at one time, though I almost never had to do it.

There was a time when such rubbish didn't happen. I recall watching a group round my board in Scotts in the 70s (my second spell with them). It was an MOD vessel - I couldn't get near the board for eager beaver top brass asking questions of Scotts top brass who knew bugger all about what I was doing. When interest wained and the labour of understanding it all got too much, they drifted away to another victim. All, that is, bar one chap who turned out to be the man who would be in charge of those dealing with Scotts direct. He smiled and shook my hand, asked me who I'd sailed with, and told me he would be dealing with me direct. And so it came to pass.

Hugh.
