21/10/13 - On this day, yesterday, in 1890 a man indispensable to the development of Jazz was born in New Orleans. He started out in his teens playing piano in the parlor houses of the city's notorious red- light district "Storyville" where he got the nickname Jelly Roll. Soon 'Jelly Roll' Morton was making his own innovations to the ragtime styles of the day becoming one of very first Jazz pianist. He travelled extensively playing in Chicago and California before 1920. In an interview for the Library Of Congress conducted by Alan Lomax, Jelly recalls a trip to Memphis during the early part of the 20th century. His colourful tale is coupled with two short performances recreating a piano duel with the local favourite Benny Frenchie.
