Ron,

I have sailed on small ships were  the Old Man and myself did six on / six off.  Not very nice.  I think this is the reason for coasters going aground, the guy on watch falls asleep and doesn't alter course !

I spent 2 - 3 years with a British outfit with just 2 mates.  I used to do the 8 - 12 watch in the evening, meaning that the 2 mates only did 10 hours a day and got a decent sleep.
