You may like this article given below, more on philosophy than mathematics.
                   
An example. For centuries mathematicians have been studying prime numbers which have no factors. For example  2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13,...Especially they studied large primes. They had no applications at all until recently. They are used in computer security in bank transactions etc. This is Sadu's specialty. A few years ago he showed me his book on security and the first chapter was on primes! 
               
Another example during WWII. A mathematician in Cambridge, Alan Turing used mathematical logic to break the German code and this played a major rule in British victory. German High Command used to send signals in code from Berlin to naval officers by wireless. When the code was broken, British knew where Germans would come and they waited there. Nobody could have predicted the use of logic in warfare!
