Grids Hugh, GRIDS.

And yes sometimes you see them walking "the long paddock."

This is a reference to the fact that sometimes farmers through bad seasons run out of feed for their cattle due too drought, and if they are short of money and cannot afford to ferry them to better pastures via trucks then they limber up the horse drawn caravan take some of their stockman and a cook and take to the long paddock.

The road always has drainage ditches on both sides of the road and because of the water that would have been there long after the feed has dried up on the land around the cattle have to eat or die they walk down the long paddock feeding on the grass that is still in the ditches on the side of the road. The grass there is always greener than the surrounding land.

Back in 2008 on our way back to Townsville, Queensland, from Perth WA, Michael and I came across such a mob of cattle on the long paddock. There a few hundred beasts in the mob and for miles the road was covered in cattle dung.

There is some good information in this Wiki article…
