G'day folks,

Just heard a man complaining that the state has taken away his freedoms.

Apparently the state of Mass is going to force people living there to take out Health Insurance.

I don't get it.

Australia has had universal health insurance for all for many many years. It is paid for out of our taxes. Of course you may take out further medical and dental insurance, that is up to the individual or family. That way you will be able to go into a private hospital if you so desire.

Recently I went to the Emergency Dept of the public hospital here in the city. I was taken in immediately for diagnosis. It turned out to be my gail bladder. It required removal. I was given further tests including a cat scan and an ultra sound scan to confirm the diagnosis.

The day after my admittance a clerk came around and said that I had ticked the 'public' box on the admission form. Did I want to change it to 'private'? meaning that my insurance would pay for the cost of all procedures. I asked her what would be the effect directly to me. She replied, "Nothing, but the TV would be free - that is my health insurance  would pay for that!  I said, put me down as a 'private' please'. If I hadn't the hospital would have charged me $11 a day for me to access the tv over my bed! 

No one in Australia can understand the health problems in the US.

Very recently the Medicare tax for ALL Australians was increased in order to pay for the newly introduced NDS.

I suppose there are some in the US who would say this is Socialism. I say this is a country looking after its citizens. Listen to the PM introduce the legislation.
