Malcolm,

I believe there were a few such launches on the upper Clyde, for the same
reasons, narrow river and uncertain tide or miscalculation. The Scottish
Hawk debacle was caused by a freakish wind that took her away from the
tugs - of the Daphne capsize I know no reasons, since I haven't looked them
up - the Ferguson tug non-launch was a flaw in the ways. Re the latter
reason, it used to be said that foremen carpenters on the eve of a launch
would tell all and sundry in the pub that the ways were not adequate, in
their opinion. Often they would add that their advice in that regard had
been rejected or ignored.

Hugh.
