City to salute parade of sail
   DUNCAN ABEY | July 20, 2013 12.00am

GLORY: The parade of tall ships on the Derwent, featuring stunning vessels such as the Europa promises to be a fabulous tribute to Hobart's maritime heritage.
HOBART'S waterfront will be transformed into a sea of white canvas on September 20 when nearly a dozen vessels with an air of yesteryear sail up the River Derwent for Tall Ships Hobart 2013.

Festival director Paul Cullen said the six-day celebration of sail, a precursor to the Australian Navy's 100th anniversary international fleet review in Sydney on October 3, would rival Hobart's tall ship visits of 1998 and the nation's bicentenary 10 years earlier.

"Ships like the Oosterschelde and the Europa are huge, and there will be nine or 10 of that size," Mr Cullen said.

"It's a tremendous opportunity to get a preview of the international review in October, and Hobart is the easiest place to get up close and personal because our port is in the middle of the city.

"The festival should be a lot of fun, especially for families."

The fleet's arrival in Hobart will be followed by a full weekend program of events, when vessels will be open for visits from the public via a "passport" system.

Nearby, Princes Wharf No.1 will house exhibitions from the National Maritime College, the fishing industry and the Sea Scouts, and the navy will highlight Hobart's historic and contemporary connections to the sea.

A maritime games will be held on Parliament House lawns.

Marching bands, semaphore flag demonstrations and a parade along Davey St will round off the nautical celebration, before the tall ship fleet lines up in front of the Tasman Bridge on the Wednesday morning to salute Tasmanian Governor Peter Underwood and set sail for Sydney.

"Then there will be a huge parade of sail," Mr Cullen said.

"Local yacht clubs will turn out with hundreds of boats and they will see the tall ships off down the river.

"People will be able to see the ships leave from the docks, but they will also be able to take up positions at places like Bellerive Bluff and Alexandra Battery in Sandy Bay to see the boats sailing away."
