Frank,

As an instance of how the "laws" of religious groups can work, or seek to work, against the common laws of a sovereign nation I need only cite the recent case of Cardinal (ex-Cardinal?) O'Brien in Scotland. After all the revelations about his sex life and sexual orientation, and plans to settle down in Dunbar here, he was "ordered" by the Vatican to leave Scotland forthwith. Which, of course, he hasn't done.

In the 19th C and before, the Church of Scotland decided who among paupers got poor relief in Scotland, and they could and would routinely discipline members publicly for misdemeanours they thought conflicted with Holy Writ or their own rules.

They were, and still are, all at it in some way.

Hugh.
