John,

When I wor a lad we didn't run to 3-course meals, even on Sundays, but I recall we didn't refer to anything as a sweet unless it came in a bag and was unwrapped to eat. During WW2, 1-course meals were the thing, and on the rare occasions when something else was on offer it was called custard, or semolina - sometimes sago, rice or tapioca (to quote a half-forgotten song).
