HOBART, your ships are coming in.

In just three weeks, the River Derwent will explode in a riot of white for the week-long celebration of international sail that is Tall Ships Hobart 2013.

Festival director Paul Cullen said the packed festival program would feature the appearance of three Dutch tall ships Oosterschelde, Europa and Telca, which have sailed together across the Indian Ocean taking in Cape Town, Mauritius, Fremantle and now Adelaide.

"The three Dutchies have come all the way around the world together," Mr Cullen said. "It's been a huge trip for them, especially for the Telca, which is not big ship."

Mr Cullen said the three Dutch ships would set off from Melbourne 10 days before the fleet's September 20 arrival date in Hobart, powering their way down Tasmania's East Coast.

Princes Wharf No. 1 will house exhibitions from the National Maritime College and the fishing industry, and Parliament House lawns will host informal "maritime games" between international crews and representatives from Tasmanian fire services and the SES.

Other festival highlights will include an appearance of the NNS Thunder, the 122m flagship of the Nigerian Navy, a rare gathering of Tasmanian heritage vessels at Constitution Dock, a grand parade down Davey St with pipe and samba bands, and a visit from the Lord Nelson.

"The Lord Nelson from the UK is the really interesting one," Mr Cullen said.

"There are only two tall ships in the world designed for teaching disabled people to sail, and the Lord Nelson is one of them.

"She has a braille compass to allow blind people to steer her, lifts between the decks, and can even get people in wheelchairs up into the rigging."

Tall Ships Hobart 2013 will run from September 20 to September 25. All activities will be free, but boarding the tall ships will require a special passport, which is $20 for adults and $10 for children under 12.
