To me, as a socialist, that does not seem unreasonable.
only because there seems to be plenty of politicians protecting the rich [after all, they are paid off by the rich], so as there is only so much pie to go round, logically the also-rans will get less.
and as republicans here like to point out, it's their own fault they are poor.................unmarried mothers with kids galore are very unlikely to have the time or inclination to go out and get a PhD.

has the welfare state become too open handed?  do the poor expect too much? how comfortable can the poor live on ukp500 to ukp850/week?

incidentally, ukp500 is about $750/week = $39,000 pa and a mother and kid can live very well indeed here on that amount. as for ukp850/week = $66,300 it is unheard of.

for reference the US national average wage index for 2011 is $42,979.61.
The average monthly Social Security benefit for a retired worker was about $1,230 [or ukp189/week] at the beginning of 2012. these are US Social Security Administration stats not mine.

so yer ukp850 is 54% MORE than the average US wage and the ukp500 is only 9% less less than the average US wage - egad!.  Nice work if you can get it. 

Clearly, it is no wonder folks from the poorer countries in europe flock to north europe for the benefits - without doubt it is a land flowing with milk and honey.

I am all for helping those worse of than the average worker through no fault of their own - but $66,300 per year is beyond my imagination. 

finally, the ukp 500/week is nearly four times the average OAP here in the USA......................!

Cameron's government's answer is. "That no body can ever receive more than £500 a week in benefits" people will have to live with in there means. The working public are all shouting HEAR HEAR. Thank god I do not after take sides.

A few weeks ago BBC showed a program saying that there are lots of people in London getting more than £500 a week in benefits. They interviewed a black woman who had a 10 year old daughter but no husband and she received some £850s a week. She was moaning that if she was capped at £500 she would have to move to a cheaper house further out of London and she would not be near her friends, also her daughter would have to change her school and lose her friends. She did not have a job. To buy a house in that district was an astronomical figure. That is why the man asked the question "Why should folk get £500 a week when he worked nearly 40 hours a week for £450"  Naturally the three members of the three parties waffled through there answers trying to please everybody.
