I wonder if there is anyone on this list that sailed on these abominations - they may have a much different view.

they were designed for BI by the leading UK naval architects in the 1960/70's whose name escapes...... Sir A. N. Other and associates, Ltd?

I happened upon one in drydock in Kobe not long after it was launched.

To the Japanese shipyard it was highly amusing [read -- ridiculous]; it was supposed to be a general cargo ship but was built like a fishing boat and there wasn't one flat plate in the hull.

There was so much vibration at sea that nothing would stay still on the bridge, reportedly stuff just shook its self to bits.

to combat this, LRS investigated the source of the vibration [LRS vibration specialists sailed on the vessel taking measurements] and discovered that because of the peculiar shape of the aft hull section water flow round the propeller was not from fore to aft but from bottom to top - the resultant cavitation produced the sever vibrations.

in an attempt to reduce this LRS designed aerofoil fins that were welded around the aft end of the hull - I'm guessing there were 15 - 20 per side. I don't know what the result was.

it was found early on that the wharf could not be seen from no 1 hatch because of the extra ordinary height of the bulwark in this area, holes had to be cut in the bulwark so that wharf could be viewed for discharge.

I would imagine they went for a song and didn't stay long before they were scrapped - 8 years in this case.

who ever was in charge of the building for BI should have been flogged and the naval architects should have had their drawing boards torn asunder.

Yesterday our local paper, the Greenock Telegraph carried the attached picture of BI's MV Aska, completed Swan Hunter in 1970, renamed Strathcarrol in 1975, sold in 1977 to become Halla Pilot, and scrapped in South Korea in 1985. A short life indeed.
