Frank,
feed forward system sounds a better idea that feed back, is it widely used in the offshore industry?
how about FMEA audits/surveys? rig manager friend of mine says BP want them all the time, they call them hazard analysis.

The power available was summed from each gen and compared with the demand signals from the Drilling equipment the resultant output was then fed to all the SCR bays in such away that it became a feed forward signal rather than the usual feedback system. This setup prevented the overload occurring in the first place rather than trying to correct an overload after the event which is what all the other systems do some even trying to generate a phaseback signal from the main Buss voltage which was in the process of collapsing due to the overload. With the feed forward setup as I said even with one genny on the board all the drilling equipment could be run admittedly the pumps, drawworks etc, could only run as fast as the amount of power available, the power limit was seamless in operation and was a pleasure to have especially when they where stuck in the hole and couldn't understand that a stalled DC motor was seen as a short circuit on the system

  tks, Frank

do you know how ross hill managed to achieve the almost impossible?
I wonder if cruise companies have,or are pursuing, not only fail safe systems but systems that ensure total black outs are impossible.
could it be that the costs to cruise lines when power fails is a small part of their overall costs and therefore hardly worth bothering about?
particularly in view of the maximum pittance in compensation [not to mention the logistic difficulty in suing] that, by law. cruise lines offer inconvenienced passengers.

Never came across a power limit system in the merchant ships but in the oil field once SCR systems came on line there where various attempts by different manufactures to protect the equipment from the idiots that operate it but the only one that managed it was Ross Hill (Australian of course) and his system worked brilliantly in preventing the drilling system from overloading the system even when only one genny was on line

As per the recent find ings of the UK P&I Club mention was made of a number of passenger ships having lost all power for days on end.
The cause is usually human error, but as they have multiple generators and the load is fairly constant I don’t understand how the electrical logic system fails to prevent total black outs.
I have never heard or witnessed Failure Mode and Effect Analysis [FMEA] surveys being carried out on ships of any type, it appears passenger ships are in need of such surveys but I don’t think they are required by classification societies.
I understand FMEA’s are carried out from time to on offshore oil rigs where, as on a passenger ship, loss of all power would be disastrous.
Anyone have any info/comment on the above?
