[BITList] passenger ships -FMEA

Frank,
feed forward system sounds a better idea that feed back, is it widely used in the offshore industry?
how about FMEA audits/surveys?  rig manager friend of mine says BP want them all the time, they call them hazard analysis.

The power available was summed from each gen and compared with the demand signals from the Drilling equipment the resultant output was then fed to all the SCR bays in such away that it became a feed forward signal rather than the usual feedback system. This setup prevented the overload occurring in the first place rather than trying to correct an overload after the event which is what all the other systems do some even trying to generate a phaseback signal from the main Buss voltage which was in the process of collapsing due to the overload. With the feed forward setup as I said even with one genny on the board all the drilling equipment could be run admittedly the pumps, drawworks etc, could only run as fast as the amount of power available,the power limit was seamless in operation and was a pleasure to have especially when they where stuck in the hole and couldn't understand that a stalled DC motor was seen as a short circuit on the system

  Never came across a power limit system in the merchant ships but in the oil field once SCR systems came on line there where various attempts by different manufactures to protect the equipment from the idiots that operate it but the only one that managed it was Ross Hill (Australian of course) and his system worked brilliantly in preventing the drilling system from overloading the system even when only one genny was on line

    Anyone have any info/comment on the above?
