Colin,

As is evident, even from the experience of my own family and friends, here and in the US, many in the US have no concept of anything beyond the ends of their noses, hence it's easy to sell them snake oil in large and profitable quantities. Indeed, they'd cut your throat for the right to buy it.

People who think there's a gravely undesirable thing called "socialised medicine" which restricts the right of the poor to die of disease and infirmity. There's what seems to be an ineradicable strain of masochism in them.

People who think and teach that the US won WW1 (nobody "won" that disaster) and WW2, not to mention the Vietnam War. Our daughter on a visit to Tucson three or four years ago found our nephew there was using a history book in high school that omitted 1939-1941. As for the period 1941-1945, the US won "with the help of the UK".

The same daughter on an earlier visit was asked if she'd driven to the US. She was assumed to be English until she corrected the assumption. At which, she was complimented on her command of the English language. "Where did you learn to speak it so well?" they asked. "Do you have TV in Scatlan? Telephones? Electricity?" I don't exaggerate. I told her she missed the chance to sow confusion about the bonnie heather hills and the wee but and ben and the haggis running round the braes. Briga %$£&^%$ doon. John Robertson (BIShip) had exactly the same experience.

These people vote.

Hugh.
