Roald Dahl voted teachers' favourite author

Roald Dahl is teachers' favourite author and Julia Donaldson's The Gruffalo is chosen as the best book for children.

The enduring popularity of Roald Dahl, who died in 1990 at the age of 74, was demonstrated again as he was voted primary school teachers' favourite author.
A new survey put five of his works among the top 10 books for children under the age of 11.

Dahl's marvellous brand of wicked humour and dark plot lines is the core of memorable books including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The BFG andThe Twits. As Dahl, the author of 19 books for children, put it: "A little nonsense now and then is relished by the wisest men."

Dahl was named by almost twice as many teachers as Julia Donaldson and JK Rowling, who shared second place.
Donaldson's The Gruffalo was voted the best book for children in the survey of 848 primary school teachers by the education resources website Teachit Primary. Siobhain Archer, the website's founder, said: "The Gruffalo was teachers' overwhelming favourite book at the moment, polling more than twice as many votes as Louis Sachar's Holes in second place. But five of Roald Dahl's books appeared in the top 10 and overall a staggering 17% of primary teachers named him as their favourite children's author."
In 2008, Booktrust initiated The Roald Dahl Funny Prize (Dahl never won a children's book prize in his lifetime) which has recognised some of the talented modern humourous children's writers - such as Andy Stanton, Philip Ardagh, Louise Rennison and Liz Pichon - who are not represented by a teacher's list that reflects older preferences.

Dahl once said his secret was that he entered a conspiracy with children against adults. He said: "It's the path to their affections. It may be simplistic, but it is the way. Parents and schoolteachers are the enemy. The adult is the enemy of the child because of the awful process of civilising this thing.''


He would have enjoyed the joke of being such a favourite with teachers.
