- [BITList] Minister for Veterans’ Affairs Subscription List WARREN SNOWDON MP Minister for Veterans’ Affairs CRAIG EMERSON MP Acting Minister for Foreign Affairs MEDIA RELEASE 7 March 2012 Preliminary assessment by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission indicates that 50 of the 55 Australian war graves in the Benghazi War Cemetery in Libya were damaged in the attack of 25-26 February 2012. Forty-five marked Australian headstones and five headstones of unknown Australians were damaged. “The desecration of the graves of Australian servicemen is a tragedy. The Australian Government and the Australian public are appalled by these acts,” Acting Foreign Minister Dr Emerson said. Libyan authorities have conveyed a formal apology to Australia for this attack. The Australian Government welcomes Libya’s undertaking to urgently finalise its investigations and hold to account those responsible. “The Australian Government recognises there is a great deal of concern in the Australian community about this attack. This news will be distressing for Australians,” Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Mr Snowdon said. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission will repair the headstones. In the interim, identifying markers will be placed on graves. There is no indication that Australian graves were targeted. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission estimates that 238 graves of ten different nationalities have been damaged. The Cross of Sacrifice, the central feature of the Benghazi War Cemetery, appears to have been the focus of the attack. The Cross has been damaged and will require replacement. Australian graves are located side-by-side in two rows close to the Cross of Sacrifice. The names of the Australian servicemen whose headstones are believed to have been damaged will be released by Mr Snowdon today.
