interesting about the uk prom..
why do you think boys don’t go to the girl’s house [where photos are taken] with a suitable enclosed vehicle, pick them up, dance all evening [where photos are taken] mostly with same girl, then deliver the girl back home [or to a friend’s house – which is code for a hotel room] ? very unusual to go separate ways – fact I’ve never heard of it.

I note all secondary schools in scotland are called high schools.

AFAIK this is different to england; I don’t recall ever hearing of a secondary school of any kind being called a high school. 

others might like to chime in if they have heard of a high school in england.

and no kindergarten, primary or high school graduation ceremonies – what a loss to the economy and the self esteem of the students!

It's a harmless import from the US, unlike some others.  It continues because the participants enjoy it nearly as much as the parents and hangers on.  One memory from the recent one - a young chap, obviously African in origin, in kilt, velvet jacket and sporran, etc - on meeting his classmates - male, the girls all stuck together - he punched the first few in reach, and they all punched him. Standard greeting at that age (18). One difference from the US version as portraited in Doris Day films, is that young chaps don't pick up their partner and take her to the prom in a coach and four. Grandson Alex, also in kilt, etc (not hired, cost a bloody fortune), arrived fully 30 minutes before his lady love, got a couple of pictures taken with her and others, then both went their separate ways.  After the preliminaries, we walked her down the hill to the buses, Alex by then having sodded off with his pals.

High school is the school after the primary school, regardless of leaving age.  I left Chapelton Primary School (attended by my father and grandfather before me) aged 11 and a half, and went to Port Glasgow High School, previously called Highholm Higher Grade School. I was finished at age 11, but too young to go on, so was held back for 6 months.  I attended an in between class in high school (French and woodwork) till I was 12. At 12 I dropped the woodwork, much to my disgust, in favour of Latin. After age 15, one had to choose between leaving and going on to Greenock High School - I left and became a gateboy in Lithgow's East Yard.

Kindergarten ceremonies, like high school graduation ceremonies, don't happen here.
