Yes US Navy have a few – don’t know how many. yes austel has a facility in mobile to build them – about 2.5 hours drive east of here.
also in mobile is alabama drydock co... I think they could build a liberty ship complete in about a week or so  in ww2. I am not sure if they are still in business now.
from time to time I get yee-haw yanks sending me pix and info of these wonderful high speed US Navy ships – implying ‘look how clever we are’.
they come down to earth when I tell them it is all australian and probably started life as a ferry.............................ha, ha.
as you say – they will be a soft target.

Looks like [Australian] Austals are alive and well in the US. Believe they have a yard just up the road from you in Mobile, The ship is based on one of their High speed ferry designs, we had one leased out to the marines up in Okinawa and they were over the moon with its capability's. We had to open a plant in the US to get around the usual rules and regs that prevail  in the US shipping industry. The craft certainly move out but being made of aluminium don't offer much in the way of protection
