Malcolm,

Basically true.  After watching the VJ Day bonfire in the Birkmyre Park, Port Glasgow, I (I was alone) searched for and found the unexploded bits of various fireworks and took them home. I discharged them up the chimney.  They  made a lovely show from where I stood, in my mother's kitchen. Beautiful colours.  Nobody called the police. 

Mum would have thumped me, but she was out.
