She was McIlwraith McEacharn's "Kooringa" just under 6,000 tons. Built by
the state dockyard at Newcastle (NSW) in 1964 and operated from Melbourne to
Fremantle.
McIwraiths, founded in Scotland but later Australianised, was always a
friendly company to BI and AUSN, indeed their office in Fremantle was in the
AUSN office (MacDonald Hamilton. later P&O House), opening off the right
hand side of the front veranda of the office.
When AUSN shut down it was said that the company had to cease operating for
three reasons.
1. Their own mistakes (the last one being the refurbishment of the
"Ormiston")
2.Government interference
3. Unions.
They further said the company could have survived if they only had to deal
with any two of the above problems, but the three combined to close the
company. However McIlwraith's offered To lend AUSN cash to help then build
bulkers (Always trade available in those days of iron ore and/or coal).
Inchcape declined and AUSN went under. Worth noting that Inchcape paid out
all the investors from his private money so no investor (including
McIlwraith's) lost money.
