wrt gtv morar, why do you think turf wars are more important than fire protection/safety.

Mike,

Wonderful.

I can relate to the one with the locked in fire extinguisher. When I joined GTV Morar as 2E/O I checked over my territory to see what I was up against. On fire safety, I was brought up to look on death by burning as "not a good thing at all", and the soda-acid extinguishers were either past their date, or of uncertain status, so I had them discharged on deck on imaginary fires, much to the alarm of the CO. The engineers who were directed to participate in the procedure didn't think much of it either, but as a compensation they also learned how to refill them. Going on from there, I found the hold smothering steam valves were inside a padlocked compartment. I asked the 3rd how anyone was supposed to get access to them. "That's OK," he said, "We know where the key is." There followed a discussion on the various meanings of "we". So I chalked up some questions on fire safety on the notice board, along with a intimation that I'd be looking into the subject. Following complaints to the Chief from those who could read, I was told by him that I should desist, it all being under control. This was French for "none of your business".

Hugh.
