The late Frank Muir told the following tale.

A businessman was looking out of a window onto a street and saw a friend walking past a bank on the other side. This friend, he recalled, had the gift of always saying the right thing at the right time.  Just as he drew level with the bank, a couple of robbers rushed out and he accidentally impeded one. While they were sorting themselves out, the robber's mask dropped, and he took out a gun and pointed it at the friend who must surely have seen his face - indeed, the friend spoke to him. But, instead of shooting him, the robber patted him on the arm and got into the getaway car.  The businessman quickly went outside and over to his friend. "Why didn't he shoot you? What did you say to him?"  His friend said, "Spare a coin for a blind man, sir."
