[BITList] Are children becoming 'digitally illiterate'?

I don't think it matters in the least if children can write machine code and lower level languages. Good fun if they can, but I'd much rather they can read, write, count, and get through life without becoming alcoholics age 10.

There is abysmal ignorance among the young, and the not so young, about more than computer languages.  From yesterday's Independent I learn that some of the supposedly brightest candidates in the TV show, The Apprentice, are not all that bright. One reckoned 60x7=4200, and thought Caracas is in Mexico. Another claimed the Nightingale Pie is called after Florence of that name.  Also, Christopher Columbus was British and discovered the potato.
