Frank, Colin,

New Year's morning, nearly 11.00, and not a soul to be seen anywhere.

On school leaving ages and an Act thereby, I assume this refers to the
raising of thge minimum age at which someone could leave. My grandfather
McIntyre died in 1934, some 43 years after his 14th birthday. He attended
Highholm Higher Grade School, as did my father, on leaving Chapelton
Primary School aged 11-12. Both worked in the shipyards, grandfather as
a riveter and Dad as a painter, so they were not set on an academic career.
When I left Chapelton in 1945, the Higher Grade School had been renamed
Port Glasgow High School. The building is still there, used as a "Resource
Centre" - sadly, Chapelton was demolished to make way for a tatty,
flat roofed, "special needs" school.

Hugh.
