As I understood the conversation, he had a ticket for going in the opposite direction. So it appears that he had bought a ticket to get to the place where he got back on the train to return. Hence he did not have a valid ticket. The ticket that he presented had expired - having been used to get to the place where he got on the train.

It doesn't matter which country you are in there is always someone trying it on.

The Metropolitan Railway in Perth, in Western Australia has a lot of burley looking ticket inspectors. They are to been seen often.

One time Helma and I got on the train as it arrived in the station so I hadn't had time to get my ticket from the machine (unmanned station). So when I arrived in Perth Central I went to the ticket collector and told him that I hadn't had time to buy a ticket. He told me to go to the office and get a ticket and then to return to him for it ot be inspected.

I did that but bought what I wold have bought at the station where I got on had I had the time. A Concession Return.

These tickets are valid for two hours and when we went to get back on the return train, Helma's had run out of time so she had to buy a single while mine was still time valid! :-)

Honesty paid off!
