"Reader John Watt in Colorado shares with us an old Scottish court action he was researching, which told of John Clerk of Eildon in the borders arguing a prescription of a water course before the House of Lords, in which he claimed, "the watter had run that way for 40 years."  One of the judges condescendingly inquired if Clerk spelled water with two Ts.  Clerk replied, "No, but we spell manners with twa Ns."

I assume John Clerk was an advocate.
