I had already noticed that about "illegal immigrants".  In the US it's an anagram of "illegals", though I recall it used to be the phrase you quoted with Mexicans inserted ad lib.   Did they invade Mexico?  I can't recall that far back - maybe they did.

While on anagrams, "twelve plus one" is an anagram of "eleven plus two".  This comes of reading Colin Dexter's books about Inspector Morse.
