Look at the second photo.  The Herald (Glasgow) printed that one with a fuller explanation.  The sand patterns are incidental - it's a fresh water inflow.  The photographer (English) - I believe he is an amateur - came with the intention of taking that very photo, camped overnight, and succeeded brilliantly.
