Dave,

Like you, we don't cook with the microwave - it's for heating things up that are already cooked, defrosting, or heating up a cup of milk when such is indicated.  My mother-in-law saw her first microwave oven in Canada while there on holiday.  Having seen someone zap a glass of water in it for some reason (probably laziness), she thereafter boiled water in it, until taken aside and told the truth.
