Frank,

The shear rams cut the drill pipe (when such is indicated) - I'd forgotten that.  Now I'll sleep. On the two vessels I worked on with Scotts - Pacnorse1 and Ben Ocean Lancer - the BOP was handled by 4 hydraulic winches round the moonpool. These took it from its transporter after the latter had clawed its way round with it from the BOP house.  Possibly technology has advanced since then (late 70s).
