hull shipping master – like the cut of his jib.
being castigated such would take the wind right out of the 3rd mate’s sails [and other mates]........................................LOL.
did the captain sign on as captain? No!, I didn’t think so..........................!
too many mates think their merde ne pue pas. but don’t let me get started on conceit.

remember when we were signing on the Nuddea in Hull the third mate when asked what he was signing on as said 3rd officer, the shipping master sent him to the back of the queue along with any one else who tried to sign on as an officer other than the radio officer who it turned out was the only one who was entitled to be signed on as an officer the shipping master then pointed out to the assemble what the official signing on name was for each rank, as it was my fist time signing on I suppose it was good ammunition for future use

but do you prefer to be known as a tradesman or an engineer – and BOTH is not the correct answer. your only choice is one or t ’other in this instance.
conversely, how many mates prefer to be called deck officer as opposed to mate – or ship driver or cargo wallah or oil hauler, etc.?

Colin,
Tradesman is OK with me, if a trifle quaint - much better then tradesperson. As for disparaging names for time-served skilled workers, "the metal bashing trades" is the worst I've heard. This came from the mouth of Geoffrey Hoon - he is a politician, I am led to believe, and Labour, unless I'm mistaken. Who was it said that "a politician is an arse upon which everything has sat, except a man"?
Janet calls from below - more anon.
Hugh.
