[BITList] awkward bastards

I must have had the dullest of experiences at sea, as the only ab I remember
was Jack Hacker. Used to always

promise time off in Japan if we did extra in the Gulf, but of course that
was a lie. Bluey Gaynor was doing motor

time with us and commented on what a dog he was.

John Spalding was 2eo when I joined and he had a dislike for Aussies so it
started off a bit ordinary but we got OK

as time went on. Maybe his bad temper was something to do with the fact that
he had an extra ball (testicle that is)

something he was happy to prove in the bars after a couple of bevies.

I believe he went on to tugs and went down with all hands in a typhoon, tow
and all.

I can remember being asked by one chief engineer to rig the phone in the
captains office so that he could listen in to the morning meetings held
there between the purser, chief off, and captain, he went on to become
commodore chief so there was certainly a certain amount of distrust if
nothing else on that ship

hugh

no one else is volunteering any anecdotes, so seems we were the only 2 who
crossed swords with awkward bastards on our journey thro the seven seas.

guess we were just the black sheep of the flock.

generally speaking, and in my experience - deck officers diplomatically kept
their thoughts on ab's they may have encountered, to themselves.

would being there for the duration dampen their dislikes of fellow
travelers, or was the idea of not rocking the boat have been a ground rule
for deck cadets?

perhaps, "grin and bear it" was a prime requirement of the deck department's
process of promotion!

I think we devil-may-care engineers had no such inhibitions - there being
many non-seagoing jobs available to us, so we were not locked in to the life
of a seaman.

we generally came from more common stock too - where the niceties of kissing
arse were vigourously discouraged, and taking shit from any jumped up punk
was definitely out.
