[BITList] land of the free - home of the dark ages.

hugh, mike

yes, at this possible water shed in the land of the free, home of the brave, there appears to be a distillation or a winnowing of the white population. evolution ( as noted below - only 34% of the people accept evolution) being just one of the aspects affecting them. I find it incredible that so many others accept the "wave the magic wand" theory?. but I suppose if one is religious one must accept that our world was made in seven days, the book say so.

on one hand we have the folk that move with the times, use common sense and adapt without much difficulty to changing times. on the other hand we have the those who consider themselves of independent pioneering stock and values but are unwilling to see any other point of view. additionally, racism plays a some part in this group's actions. it is the latter group who are the "mass regression into idiocy", as hugh put it.

I disagree to some extent that there is "regression" (unless hugh is referring to mental regression) with them. it appears they continue to hold onto their old (300 year) anti-red coat ideology of all government is bad, "they" are trying to take our guns and we will not heed laws passed by the majority because we have our rights - especially if the law was not made by the political party I belong to.

They are invariably white, live or have lived in rural southern or central areas of the country, and alone, are generally without passion. However, don't mess with their right to bear arms, speak of progressive blacks or the government making laws and oddly enough the united nations (always associated with the black helicopters of the new world order) - they then come together as a passionate but senseless mob. You have seen them recently on tv.

to me, the average "pioneer" is a mix of jed clampitt (beverly hillbillies), alf garnett ('till death us do part) and a soupcon of john wayne. they are easily persuaded that their customary way of life is under attack and threatened by some government entity - yes the US government is out to get them! this combination is producing a volatile mix in american politics.

The newly elected lot is now attempting to get reasonable healthcare system for all citizens, but doing a lousy job of telling us what we will get.

the majority of US voters voted for a univeral healthcare sustem, but theses "pioneers" (assisted by huge amounts of money from the healthcare insurance lobby and riled up by radio and tv talking heads who support the opposition) are vehemently against this now, for many reasons - some quite ridiculous. All republican politicians are against it because it smacks of socialism. You saw some cowboy from south carolina shout at the president, "you lie"!
Imagine some one shouting the same at the queen when she opens parliament!

To the average american, the mention of socialism stops them in their tracks!

agree with you hugh, " Some hard research needs to be done into why there is evidently a mass regression into idiocy over there, lest they descend on the rest of us a-burning at the stake, or the modern equivalent."

I have really lost interest in the childish bickering, ignorance and out right lies that the opposition to healthcare for all come up with daily.

The UK NHS has been brought in for good and evil by both sides! Is most of the population against it now? do they want to pay large amounts for health insurance premiums?

and we (the USA) are attempting (usually forcibly) to export our values/democracy to nations we have deemed will benefit from it.....................................don't make me laugh.

has it dawned upon our missionaries (and industrial complex) that this is an exercise in futility we can no longer afford?

PS sorry you stopped swithering and didn't go to church

Mike, Colin,

So only 34% of people in the US accept evolution? Given 82.16% of statistics are made up on the spot, that leaves 6.7% who could be telling the truth, or not. Some hard research needs to be done into why there is evidently a mass regression into idiocy over there, lest they descend on the rest of us a-burning at the stake, or the modern equivalent. However, words like plank, eye and mote come to mind. A few weeks back, Glasgow City Council reversed a ban on the showing of the film Life of Brian, to allow it to be shown as part of a festival. "We'd forgotten we had banned it," was roughly the sort of thing we heard from them. All I'll say for them is that they at least saw it before banning it, unlike the religious right who slavered against it from a distance. Until I started this e-mail I was swithering about going to church this morning, being currently a bit sick of attitudes in the Church of Scotland to this and that. I think I'll not bother shaving, and stay at home.

Hugh.
