Colin, John,

>From the Mail account I can't work out exactly what the "co-pilot" did - press a button? flick a switch? pull a lever? - and why. As for "freezing", I froze twice with BI, though only for a couple of seconds. The first occurred at the ME controls while still a fiver - Ernie Elrick running the lesson. The telegraph rang and my mind emptied. Ernie answered the telegraph, pushed me to one side, performed the manoeuvre, then handed the controls back to me, the only comment being one of his scowls. The second and last was when I noted flames and smoke issuing from the top of the entablature on Dilwara's port engine. "Good heavens !!" I thought, and looked at it in alarm. Then I grabbed the requisite extinguisher, a powder cartridge in a pistol type frame, and blasted the bugger. It vanished. Oily waste where it shouldn't have been, and a spark coming up the scraper box with the top piston tie rod. Dilwara's port engine was famous for scavenge fires. Anyway, when describing the most likely reaction to a fire, I always tell the listener it will be panic, so prepare for that.

Hugh.
