It happens all the time.  I once saw a reference in a magazine, American, I 
think, to Glasgow, on the lines of - ".... Glasgow, 400 miles north of 
London."  I have just finished rereading a book of linked short stories 
written by a friend (now deceased), all set in Greenock, a town that is 
mentioned more than twice in the stories.  The main character is described 
in the publisher's preamble as, "Billy Thomson, an apprentice in Glasgow's 
Clydeside."  It might only exist with reference to London, but Glasgow sure 
gets around.
