G'day Robbo,

I lived in Papua New Guinea for over five years and while I did climb up Mt Balbi in Bougainville,

an active volcano, and also climbed up Mt Wilhelm in New Guinea [14,790 ft],

the highest mountain in New Guinea (I didn't get to the top of Mt Wilhelm), we were blown off by cold and the effects of a cyclone which was hitting North Queensland at the time. I know what the Kokoda Track would be like to traverse.

While I was teaching here in Townsville, at least two teachers made the track. Before they left I spoke to each of them and told the that I was going to give them some advice. And, when they returned would they please tell me what they thought of my advice.

The advice was - whatever the locals want to charge you for carrying your bag, pay the man the money.

In both cases when they returned, they said that that was the best advice that they had ever been given.

Imagine then what it was like for those Australian diggers during the war having to carry a weapon and ammunition and their own gear and still have to fight the Japanese.

I take my hat off to anyone who has 'done' the Kokoda Track.

Four people have died attempting it this year.

ooroo

Bad typists of the word, untie.
