John,

There's no law that prohibits Indian spirits from being as good as anyone else's, but the they don't make "Scotch", nor is "whiskey" made in Scotland - I believe the Irish call it that. Other places should invent their own names. "Whisky" is the Anglicised version of the Gaelic uisge beatha and "whiskey" is ditto for the Erse. I once sent a tongue in cheek e-mail to an Arizona newspaper about their use if "whiskey" for "whisky" in their on-line edition. I got a nice reply from the reporter in question saying my message had been amplified by the fact that he was sipping a glass of the Glengoyne while reading it. It was corrected forthwith. I haven't a drop in the house, bar a half bottle of Baileys my granddaughter gave me for my birthday.

Hugh.
