Mike,

In local shipyards here, and probably also on other rivers, the toilets for
the workers were on stilts out over the river. This was certainly the case,
at least up to the 50s. There was a long, communal trough along which water,
probably salt, flowed, ending up in the river along with added substances.
It was a common ploy of the thoughtless young to light a paper and sail it
along the trough causing mayhem and bad language. One shipbuilder was on
record as preferring the camaraderie of the communal toilet, where he he
could read his paper, smoke his pipe, and enjoy a chat with his employees.
I heard of one chap who was in the habit of going behind a line of bushes in
a corner instead of using the above. One day the lads fashioned a paddle on
a long pole, intercepted the turd before it hit the ground, and made quietly
off with it after witnessing the chap's frantic search through his trousers
and longjohns. What fun.

Hugh.
