John,

Definitely sounds right to me also, and it cheered me up a good deal after Nos 1 and 2 and what I've had to suffer since around 10.00 last night when it became obvious that we were in for even less Scottish Hogmanay spirit on BBC Scotland TV than in previous years. At around 10 to 2009 normal programmes gave way to a 10 minute run up to the bells. The preceding programmes were, indeed, normal - showing them on the 31st of December didn't make them remotely appropriate, regardless of the fact that they show them every year to con the undiscerning. So midnight came with no preliminaries - there's not much they can do to mess up time, and we were back to the same old "party in the studio" of other years, with breaks to show us a sea of faces in Edinburgh, thousands of them, all getting pissed, or murdering each other for all I could see from a camera a mile away. What we were supposed to get from looking at this was never made clear. We sat with TV zapper in one hand and a sherry in the other, cutting off the sound each time some young lady or gent in the studio party, there solely by virtue of being Scottish and available, sang their "latest single". The traditional bits in between were fine, they are always fine, but they get shorter every year. This morning my wife switched on the TV and there we were again, in some recorded monster sodding "party" in London, with people singing "for the sake of old leng zyne". Only two of these words are actually in the song - "for" and "old". Much more of it and I'll broach the Blackwood's gin bottle (made in Shetland) - I think it's being sober that does it. Not the Glenmorangie, that's for the 3rd.

Despite the above girning about things that don't really matter, we did have an enjoyable time, with 3 actual first foots : daughter, son-in-law and grandson, the first for a good many years.

Hugh.
