John,

A fascinating mix of photos, but how times change ! The one taken in the Iraqi power station (it shows a "broken turbine shaft, but I can't see anything broken) refers to conditions in the station - oily floors and no safety equipment. That fair takes me back to Kincaid's fitting shop where the concrete floor had a fine patina of oil, and the durbar plating on platforms here and there was oily - it kept the rust away. I never ever saw a rusty floorplate in BI. As for safety equipment, many journeymen wore a bunnet, and we all wore boiler suits. Accidents? Plenty of splinters in fingers, mostly avoidable - an engineer never fail to run a finger over a jagged edge to confirm it's jagged.

Hugh.
